Low water pressure problems can surface in different ways and can be
frustrating. It often happens when the water comes through your faucets in trickles rather than the normal flow.
This can cause a lack of quality in your home. In this article, we will discuss the possible reasons for your
low water pressure. We will also offer things you can do to correct the situation.
The Main Shutoff Valve Is Not Fully Open
In many homes, there are 2 major shutoff valves controlling the water to
your house. The first valve is the meter valve. Usually, you will not use this valve as it’s used by the water
company. That said, if your water pressure is low throughout your home, it could be that this valve is not fully
open.
Leaking Pipes
If you have access to the pipes, take a look around the pipes to see if
there are any wet spots or pools of water. Leaking pipes can cause damage to your foundation and can contaminate
your drinking water. If you find the culprit, try to fix it or call a plumber.
Dry off the outside of the leak after turning off the water. Wrap a rubber
patch around where the pipe is cracked. Use electrical tape and a pipe repair clamp attaching it to the rubber
patch to the pipe. This could also stop further damage for a few days.
The Pressure Regulator Is Not Working
Try and find out if the pressure regulator is not working properly. Get an
accurate reading by attaching a water pressure gauge to the outside hose spigot. The pressure gauge should give
you an immediate reading of the pressure when you turn on the water. If it’s lower than the regulator is
reading, your problem might be with the pressure regulator.
Clogging Water Pipes
Clogging water pipes is one of the most common problems for low water
pressure. Clogs usually build up when your home is supplied water through iron pipes. Iron is susceptible to
rusting which can break off and obstruct water in your system. If you think that clogged pipes might be
restricting your water supply, you should contact a plumber.
Poor Water Distribution
You might not have to schedule a plumbing service if your water service
provider is already aware of the problem and working on it. Reach out to your neighbors and see if they are
experiencing water pressure issues as well. If they are having issues, contact the water provider. We do
recommend planning what options you have in case it takes more than a day or so to be resolved.
Shared Lines
If you run off a shared line, there are probably too many ways of diverting
the water in too many different directions. This can result in low water pressure because of several plumbing
fixtures. This could have happened if a mistake was made when the plumbing was installed in your home. It could
have been caused by a DIY plumbing project that went bad. A shared line can cause poor water pressure so you
should contact your plumber to fix the problem.
Act as Quickly as Possible
Low water pressure can be more than frustrating it could be a sign that
something is not operating properly and you should not ignore it. If you think your home has low water pressure
because of something going on internally or because of something happening outside, it’s important to find out
what the problem is and contact your plumber.
